LSUE Professor's Artwork Featured In Local Exhibition
July 02, 2025
EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Assistant Professor of Fine Arts Symantha Jones is among the featured artists in the Acadiana Center for the Arts’ (AcA) annual summer group exhibition, Our Point in Space, now on display in the Main Gallery through August 16, 2025.
Our Point in Space serves as AcA’s annual summer showcase, inviting Louisiana-based artists to explore their place in the world—personally, regionally, or globally. The exhibition prompts artists to consider how we define where we stand, physically or metaphorically, through narrative, abstraction, structure, or representation. This year’s theme was developed by Luminous Lookout, a trio of South Louisiana artists who use representational imagery to visualize narratives and foster critical dialogue.
Jones’ contribution to the exhibition is a small sculpture titled My Thoughts Overgrow My Usefulness (Bettina), constructed from reclaimed paper, cardboard, wire, glue, acrylic, and gouache. The sculpture measures 12 x 5 x 6 inches.
“Bettina is part of my Inescapable Moments series, a collection of small sculptural houselets made from discarded packaging,
glue, wire, and acrylic mediums,” Professor Jones explains. “Each piece of the series
has a personality and exists as the tangible refraction of a lost memory that escapes
its owner to become part of someone else’s story. The series explores the ways we
haunt ourselves and our homes, leaving behind remnants of our lives to haunt others.”
Jones, who joined the LSU Eunice faculty in August 2021, has played a key role in enriching the campus’s arts programming. She revived the LSUE Art Club and helped launch “Bengal View,” a curated vantage point offering a panoramic perspective of campus architecture.
In addition to her exhibition work, Jones will be featured in Basin Arts’ Art Circle Blog on Thursday, July 3, sharing insights into her creative process. That same day, she will take over Basin Arts’ Instagram account (@basinarts), offering a behind-the-scenes look at her work. More about Basin Arts can be found at www.basinartslafayette.com.
The Acadiana Center for the Arts is located at 101 West Vermilion Street in downtown Lafayette. For more information about Our Point in Space and upcoming events, visit www.acadianacenterforthearts.org.
