Current Reservists, National Guard, & U.S. Coast Guard Members
Current Reservists, National Guard, and U.S. Coast Guard members who have completed high school and basic training, and are in good standing with their current units.
First time applicants: must complete VA Form 22-1990 (Application for VA Education Benefits). This is typically done online using the Education Benefits Application. Students must also provide a copy of the DD Form-2384 (Notice of Basic Eligibility), which is given to them by an Education Services Officer from their unit. The copy of the DD-2384 must be dropped off or mailed to the VA Office.
After the application is processed by the VA, students will receive a “Certificate of Eligibility” (COE) from VA outlining the details of their VA Education Benefits. All students must also bring or send a copy of their “Certificate of Eligibility” to the VA Office.
Some Chapter 1606 applicants are eligible for the “Selective Reserves Kicker” that can increase their monthly rate. If applicants are eligible for the “kicker,” they need to provide a copy of the contract.
Transfer students, or LSU Eunice students who have changed their degree plan after already receiving benefits under Chapter 1606, must complete the VA form 22-1995 (Request for Change of Program or Place of Training). Click here for a list of approved programs at LSU Eunice.
Chapter 1606 students are required to verify their enrollment on or after the last day of each benefit month by calling the VA at 1-877-823-2378 or by accessing the VA W.A.V.E. website. Students will be prompted by the automated system to provide their VA file numbers (SSN) and passwords (first time password is the last 6 digits of your SSN).
All VA students must also bring or send the following documents to the VA Office at the beginning of each semester:
This must be done each semester, as soon as schedules are final and have been approved by their advisors. The VA office at LSU Eunice cannot certify students to receive payments from the VA until all of the above documentation has been received.
