LSU Launches $1.5 Billion Fierce for the Future Campaign

Historic Campaign is Largest in Louisiana’s History, First to Unite LSU’s Campuses Statewide

BATON ROUGE – Today, LSU announced the launch of a $1.5 billion campaign in support of the flagship campus in Baton Rouge, the LSU AgCenter, LSU of Alexandria, LSU Eunice, LSU Health New Orleans, LSU Health Shreveport, LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center and LSU Shreveport. LSU’s Fierce for the Future Campaign is the largest fundraising campaign for higher education in the history of Louisiana.

The Fierce for the Future Campaign is also LSU’s first campaign uniting its campuses statewide. Jointly leading the campaign with a spirit innate to LSU, charged with tenacity and purpose, are the LSU Foundation, LSU Alumni Association, Tiger Athletic Foundation and Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation in Baton Rouge; the LSUA Foundation in Alexandria, La.; the LSUE Foundation in Eunice, La.; LSU Health Foundation New Orleans in New Orleans; and the LSU Health Sciences Foundation and LSUS Foundation in Shreveport, La.

LSU President F. King Alexander said of the campaign’s importance, “LSU is more than just a university. It is home to a unique combination of people, partnerships and ideas that fuel the engine of progress across Louisiana and around the world. Gifts to the Fierce for the Future Campaign will empower LSU to drive solutions to global issues that Louisiana knows better than most while simultaneously preparing tomorrow’s leaders to make a difference in the lives of others.”

The Fierce for the Future Campaign focuses on raising philanthropic support to advance six pillars: arts and culture; coast, energy and environment; research and economic development; health and well-being; education; and leadership. Connecting these pillars is LSU’s deep commitment to positive transformation of opportunity, resources and well-being for all. The Fierce for the Future Campaign pillars align with the strategic challenges identified in LSU Strategic Plan 2025: Leading Louisiana. Impacting the World., introduced in fall 2017.

Though LSU’s work begins in Louisiana, the university’s influence extends far beyond its borders. LSU is fiercely dedicated to bettering life for all citizens in Louisiana and the world. Each of LSU’s campuses has identified fundraising priorities that will collectively generate solutions for the people in Louisiana that hold the promise of making profoundly positive impacts around the world.

The Fierce for the Future Campaign is LSU’s third advancement campaign. The LSU Campaign launched April 18, 1997. Campaign priorities were scholarships, faculty support funds, educational technology, LSU Libraries and unrestricted endowment funds. In February 1999, the campaign reached its $150 million goal—more than two years ahead of the targeted date of June 30, 2001. Ultimately, donors gave $255 million to the LSU Campaign, exceeding the original campaign goal by 70 percent and extending the campaign’s impact to include construction and renovation projects and an even greater focus on scholarship support. 

In 2006, LSU publicly launched the Forever LSU Campaign, the four pillars of which were student support, faculty support, university-wide support and campus infrastructure. In a historic show of generosity, more than 50,000 LSU alumni, friends and corporations united to surpass the Forever LSU campaign’s $750 million goal, contributing $764 million by Dec. 31, 2010; an additional $34 million in state-matching funds brought the final total to $798 million. Forever LSU funded advancements that have played a key role in LSU’s ascension into the top tier of several national rankings.

The success of the Fierce for the Future Campaign will set the course for the kind of university LSU will be—the quality of the education LSU will offer, the research LSU will conduct and the impact LSU will have. LSU anticipates that 60 percent of campaign gifts will be in support of academics, with the remaining 40 percent of campaign gifts made in support of athletics. Specifically, LSU’s Fierce for the Future Campaign goals, totaling $1.5 billion, are $724 million in support of academics on the flagship campus; $27 million in support of alumni engagement on the flagship campus; $603 million in support of athletics on the flagship campus; $146 million in support of LSU’s health and biomedical campuses, i.e., LSU Health New Orleans, LSU Health Shreveport and LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center; and $29 million to support LSU of Alexandria, LSU Eunice and LSU Shreveport.

Louisiana’s most urgent and compelling concerns cannot be solved without the human capital LSU provides. The Fierce for the Future Campaign answers the call to respond to the needs of LSU’s friends and neighbors as the university improves lives everywhere, from providing an accessible, affordable, outstanding education to leading lifechanging research and outreach that blazes trails and pushes boundaries. United across disciplines and campuses, propelled by the engagement and investment of LSU’s supporters, LSU will bring its all for the future of Louisiana and the world—because the stakes are too high for cautious ideas.
