Honors Program

The LSU Eunice Honors Program offers academically well-prepared students an enriched selection of learning experiences to increase their depth and breadth of knowledge. Honors students have an opportunity to go beyond the material covered in regular class sections and advance their understanding of subjects that will make learning more rewarding and fulfilling. In addition to taking individual honors courses, students also have an opportunity to earn an associate degree with honors distinction.

Requirements for New Students

  • A student applying for the Honors Program must have an ACT composite score of 25 or higher AND a math ACT of 22 or higher AND English ACT of 18 or higher.
  • Interested students must complete an Honors Program Information Sheet in the office of the program director. Most students will attend an organizational meeting with the Honors Program Director, Administrators, the Honors Council, Program Professors, and students.
  • Enroll in the first Honors seminar (1 credit hour) the first semester it is offered.
  • Students already enrolled at LSU Eunice who meet the ACT requirements may visit with the program director to discuss entering the program.

Alternate Admission Procedures
Current LSU Eunice students and other students with previous college work whose ACT scores meet the requirements for admission of new students shown above may also apply. In addition, students with previous college courses may apply by submitting a complete transcript of all college work. Students must have at least a 3.5 grade-point average on at least 12 hours of college-level course work. In making admissions decisions, the Honors Council will also evaluate the quality of the courses. Additionally, the completed work must include at least one college algebra course equivalent to Math 1015 or 1021 and one English course equivalent to English 1001. Students applying under the alternate admission criteria will also be required to write an essay to be selected from various topics in a timed, supervised setting. They must furnish two letters of recommendation from professors whose courses they have previously completed. Students must apply for admission prior to their third semester of college work at LSU Eunice to become part of the program. Full completion of the program may not be possible with late entry because of scheduling and availability of classes.

Continuation in the Honors Program
To continue in the Honors Program, students must:

  • Maintain a 3.3 overall GPA.*
  • Complete a minimum of 3 hours of honors credit per semester (excluding the summer).
  • Besides the initial 1-credit-hour honors seminar, the student must enroll in and complete the subsequent three 1-credit-hour honors seminars.
  • Upon completion of 15 hours of honors credit, including the 4-hour sequence of honors seminars, subsequent enrollment in honors courses is optional.
  • If at any time a student is placed on academic probation, he or she will be dropped from the Honors Program.
