Post 9/11, G.I. Bill
An educational benefits program for students who served on active duty for at least 90 days on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals who were discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days of service. The transferability option under the Post-9/11 GI Bill allows service members to transfer unused benefits to their spouses or dependent children.
First time applicants: must complete VA Form 22-1990 (Application for VA Education Benefits). This is typically done online using VONAPP. Veterans must also provide a copy of the "Member-4" page of the DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty). Active Duty personnel must have an Education Services Officer from their unit complete Part II of the VA Form 22-1990.
After the application is processed by the VA, students will receive a "Certificate of Eligibility" (COE) from VA outlining the details of their VA Education Benefits. All students must also bring or send a copy of their "Certificate of Eligibility" to the VA Office (Acadian Center, Room 112).
Transfer students, or LSU Eunice students who have changed their degree plan after already receiving benefits under Chapter 33, must complete the VA form 22-1995 (Request for Change of Program or Place of Training). Click here for a list of approved programs at LSU Eunice.
Transfer of Benefits to Dependents
Service members may request a transfer of their Post-9/11 benefits using the Transfer of Education Benefits (TEB) website. After leaving the armed forces, transferors may initiate the process by submitting a written request to VA. Once the transfer is approved, the family member must apply for the benefit with the Department of Veterans Affairs by completing VA Form 22-5490. Transfer students, or LSU Eunice students who have changed their degree plan after already receiving benefits under Chapter 33, must complete the VA form 22-5495 (Request for Change of Program or Place of Training). These forms may all be completed online using VONAPP.
All VA students must also bring or send the following documents to the VA Office (Acadian Center, Room 112) at the beginning of each semester:
• A copy of your Course and Fee Statement
• Completed VA Student Advisor Sheet
• Current, Completed Request for Certification
This must be done each semester, as soon as schedules are final and have been approved by their advisors. The VA office at LSU Eunice cannot certify students to receive payments from the VA until all of the above documentation has been received.
