Mission Statement
The Office of Developmental
Education and the Pathways to Success Program at the Louisiana State University
at Eunice is committed to the dignity and worth of the individual and exists to
serve under prepared and at-risk students in their personal and educational
development so they may be successful in completing their life long goals.

What is
Developmental Education?
A developmental approach to
education involves looking at the whole person and helping each student achieve
their goals. The program is based upon successful methods of instruction.
Students have access to proven policies, courses, and services that strengthen
basic skills necessary for success in college.

Who
Qualifies for the Program?
Students who score a composite
score of 15 or below on the ACT, or who do not have an ACT score, are
automatically enrolled in Pathways and may not opt out of the program.
Other students may request admission into the program by contacting the Director
of Developmental Education at 337-550-1433 or in Manual Hall room 207.

Information For new developmental students
This mandatory one-year program
consists of writing skills (English 0001), quantitative skills (Mathematics 0001
and 0002), an orientation to university studies (University Studies 1005),
critical reading (University Studies 0008), and approved electives in several
different academic disciplines. Students who are placed into Pathways to Success
automatically upon admission will follow a prearranged set of classes as
indicated below and are permitted to enroll in a maximum of 12 credit hours per
semester.

ADVISING
Meeting with one’s academic
advisor at least three times per semester is required of all Pathways students.
Advisor visits are assigned points toward a student’s grade in the university
studies classes (UNIV 1005 and UNIV 0008). A student must also meet with
their advisor in order to schedule, add, or drop a class.
CLASS ATTENDANCE
Attendance is mandatory for all class
meetings.
There is no such thing as an “excused absence” in any Pathways course.
Students absent for more than one week of classes will automatically fail the
course. Missing
-
four (4) classes or more
for a summer course that meets four times a week,
-
four (4) classes or more
in a semester for a course that meets three times a week,
-
three (3) classes or more
in a semester for a course that meets two times a week, or
-
two (2) classes or more
for a class that meets once a week
will result in a failing
grade for that course.
LSUE defines attendance as
the student being present in the assigned classroom each class period from the
time the class is scheduled to begin until the class is scheduled to end.
Students who come in after the scheduled starting time or leave before the
scheduled ending time can, at the discretion of the instructor, be counted as
absent. Please note that makeup work is assigned at the discretion of the
instructor. It is the prerogative of the instructor to allow no make up
work.

INSTRUCTIONAL LABORATORY
The educators and staff of LSUE have developed an
instructional laboratory for students who require extra assistance for their
Pathways to Success classes at no cost to the student. Students who
receive a grade below 70% or C- on a major assignment in either English or
mathematics will be required to participate in
laboratory instruction for two (2) hours per week until their grades reach 70%
(or higher). Information on students who need additional help in any
course is passed on to the Director who then monitors student activity
electronically. Note that the instructional laboratory is available to all
Pathway students at any time, regardless of in-class performance. Please
take advantage of the instructional laboratory before grades decline.

Additional Information
Students are enrolled in the
program for as little as two semesters and typically begin taking their college
level courses prior to completing the program. Any course beginning with a
zero (0) does not count toward a degree. These developmental courses boost
the students’ knowledge and skills in particular areas of study, which allows
them to progress into their college level courses. Three to 12 credit
semester hours may be taken while in the Pathways to Success program.
While developmental courses do
not count toward a degree, they do count in the student’s GPA (Grade Point
Average). Students must pass a course with a C or better in order to
progress to the next class. As with many of the courses, students need to
strive toward obtaining a grade of A or B in developmental classes in order to
have an adequate foundation to progress to college level courses.
A math placement exam is given
at posted times, generally prior to orientation. Students who have a math
ACT sub-score of 17 and below and who wish to bypass Pre-Algebra (MATH 0001) may
take the test to be placed in Introductory Algebra (MATH 0002). Students
with an ACT sub-score of 18 or better in mathematics may enroll in college level
mathematics courses (MATH 1014). The same is true for English (ENGL 1001).
A scientific reasoning score of 21 or better is needed for nursing and allied
health students to take Human Anatomy lecture and lab (ZOOL 1011/1012).
Financial Aid can be applied
toward developmental courses. Please see our Financial Aid Office about
the limit of developmental courses for which one can receive aid.
