Your college goals can be within your reach regardless of how old you are when you start or what your previous educational background may be. It will take a lot of hard work, a firm commitment, and strong determination. Even then, some students will not achieve their goals. But many will go on to graduate, an accomplishment that they can look on with pride for the rest of their lives.

Often, adults who are returning to school after being away for many years are apprehensive. That’s to be expected. But most returning students quickly become adjusted to the college environment. They discover that many of their classmate are older students who share similar experiences.

If you have any questions, be sure to give us a call toll free at 1-888-FOR-LSUE, ext. 223, 224, or 218. For the Admissions Office, call ext. 305. The local numbers are 550-1+ext.

1. Make a commitment and then do it.

Whatever your age or background, you have an excellent chance of achieving success in college if you work hard enough and remain committed. LSU at Eunice is a 2-year comprehensive college with more than thirty-five years of experience helping students meet the challenges of college. But you'll never know what you can do unless you take the steps to get started.

2. Examine the costs and the pay-off.

As a 2-year college, LSUE has tuition that is much lower than at 4-year campuses. Your modest investment in college can pay off in significantly higher earning power for the rest of your life. You will also be enriched in other ways by the knowledge and skills you acquire.

Sandra Rougeau: After years of working where there was no opportunity to advance, I decided to return to college. With the support and encouragement of the LSUE staff and with financial aid available to me, I feel I can reach my goals. I encourage anyone to go back to college regardless of age or background. It will change your attitude and make you more confident in yourself.

3. Consider the advantages of attending a 2-year college in the LSU System.

At LSUE, your classes will be taught by experienced instructors who are dedicated to helping students succeed. Because LSUE is a 2-year comprehensive college, you can choose to work toward a 1-year certificate or 2-year associate degree, or you can enroll in a 2-year transfer program that can be applied toward a bachelor's degree at another college. As an LSUE student, you will be earning credits and degrees from a campus that is part of an internationally recognized university system.

4. Recognize your strengths as an older student.

Today, more and more adults of all ages are enrolling at LSUE. They may be attending at the same time that their children are enrolled in college (or even their grandchildren). Older students typically have the discipline and maturity to make the most of the opportunities college offers. They stay focused on their goals.

5. Complete an admissions application.

LSUE is an open admissions college that accepts all graduates of Louisiana high schools and graduates who have earned the GED. All you have to do is pick up an application from the Admissions Office, Room 102, Manuel Hall, or call (337) 550-1305 (8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday). You can also obtain an LSUE Catalog with details about all programs. In addition, LSUE's web site, www.lsue.edu, includes the catalog and admissions application.

Tellin Fontenot: At LSUE, older students who have been out of college for many years will find the support and help they need. To accomplish your goals, you should strive for excellence in everything you do and improve your self-discipline. With dedication and persistence, you can keep moving forward to reach your goals and the rewards offered by new levels of achievement.

6. Apply for financial aid.

The majority of LSUE students qualify for federal financial aid programs–grants, loans, or work-study assistance. You can get details and an application from the LSUE Financial Aid Office, Room 110, Acadian Center, (337) 550-1282. Be sure to start the application process well in advance–at least three months before the semester begins.

7. Take the American College Test (ACT).

Do the best you can on this standardized test, but don't worry about your performance. LSUE advisors will use your ACT scores to place you in classes at your level. If you need to brush up in subjects like English or mathematics, you can take a developmental class to build the foundation you need for other college studies. For materials to register to take the ACT, contact the Office of Student Affairs, (337) 550-1218, preferably several months before your planned enrollment.

8. Meet with your faculty advisor.

Once you have applied for admission and taken the ACT, you are ready to register for classes. During registration, you will meet with your faculty advisor to plan your schedule of classes. If you need help deciding on a major, you can talk with counselors who will guide you in the right direction. You can enroll in class on-line using the my.LSUE system.

9. Support is available–use it.

Once you are taking classes, be sure to use the support that's available to all LSUE students. Faculty members schedule 10 office hours each week to help students. Tutoring in many subjects is readily available in the Tutorial Center. Counselors can assist you with personal problems or help you reach a decision. Most important of all, you should meet other students in your classes. LSUE is a friendly campus where we all try to help one another.

Chad Oliver: In order to succeed in college, you need a positive attitude, determination, willingness to succeed, and a strong commitment to your education. As part of this process, you should look within yourself to understand the reasons why you want to attend college.

10. Plan a big celebration when you graduate!

Graduation for older students is a really special occasion attended by spouses, children, and the rest of their proud families.
